Literature Text

surround me
like chattering teeth.
crowing and sneering,
cheer me on to
the ocean.
water lapping at my toes,
gulping at my thighs.
hungry for my waist deep
secrets.
algae lines around my ribs,
capping my arms;
elbow deep.

constellations hinged
on the oceans
horizon surface.
they are whats holding
us up.
thin strings,
tightly wound,
spinning out of
control.
the stars
are just something
pretty to look at,
as we
spiral.

i am attracting
octopi now,
standing near
tide pools, they
flock to me.
leaving suction
marks on my
pallid calves.
i wonder what they
think when they
scale
my hips.
tentacles curious;
touching the
protruding
bones on my
shoulders like
they are made of
new coral.

i am cold now
and the octopi
are taking
me away.
contrary to popular belief, octopi is plural for octopus.

Wow. That really pulled me in. Despite the title, the ending took me by surprise.
